A whirlwind 24 hours in Philadelphia, a great stop off on Amtrak Acela Express.

Philadelphia is once of the stops on the Amtrak Acela Express.
Philadelphia is once of the stops on the Amtrak Acela Express.

Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, is one of the stops on the Amtrak Acela Express, the high-speed train that runs between Boston and Washington DC.

While it may not have the glitz and glam of New York or California, Philadelphia has an unexpected charm all of its own. Once you've taken a stroll down its streets and experienced some of the wonderful attractions on offer, we wouldn't be surprised if you end up falling in love with Philly.

A city with a past

As you step off the Acela Express at the 30th Street Station, you'll find yourself in the heart of the city. What you may not have realised, is that is Philadelphia was the United States' first UNESCO World Heritage City.

This is owed to the city's significance as the birthplace of democracy in America, with many great historic events taking place at Independence Hall - it was here the Declaration of Independence was adopted and the US Constitution signed.

However, today you'll find that Philadelphia has married its rich heritage with a thriving art and cultural scene to create a dynamic, modern city.

A brisk start

Settle down for a delicious breakfast at the locals favourite, the Dutch Eating Place. The service is friendly, and the atmosphere genuinely Philly with a good serving of comfort food. Once your hunger is satisfied, head over to the Independence National Historical Park. It is here that you'll discover another piece of Philadelphia's past, with this L-shaped strip, home to Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and of course, a wonderful park.

Continuing on this historic track, the Reading Terminal Market is the perfect place for some morning tea or an early lunch. Established back in 1892, it's the States' oldest farmers market, and boasts some of the best food around.

Artistic at heart

Make your way along to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, situated on the banks of the Schuylkill River's Rowing Basin. Behind the classically-inspired facade of the museum, you'll find one of the country's largest art collections. A mix of new and old, with world-class exhibitions, there is always something to discover here.

When it's time for dinner, there is plenty of choice, from down-to-earth dining at Talula's Garden to a gourmet experience at Barclay Prime. Dessert is the perfect way to end a wonderful day, and you'll find it at the Max Brenner Chocolate Bar, or the delightfully retro Franklin Fountain sundae bar.
