The North American continent holds a great fascination for many throughout the world. Its culture and iconic cities feature in our favourite television programmes, and a number of people dream about some day seeing America with their own eyes.

But rather than wondering how the other half lives, why not across to the U.S. and see for yourself? Thanks to Amtrak, you can enjoy a leisurely ride along the historic Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad through the bucolic landscapes of Indiana and Ohio to the Appalachian Allegheny Mountains and the picturesque Potomac Valley.

Departing D.C.

Your journey on the Capitol Limited will start from in Washington D.C., a city full to the brim with national heritage. In addition to the White House, home of the President and one of the most recognisable buildings in the world, the city has much to offer by way of historical landmarks and incredible museums.

Wander the halls of the Smithsonian and marvel at the scale of the Lincoln memorial, where a colossal statue of the 16th U.S. President stares out over the Reflecting Pool. If you haven't got long in the capital, one of the best ways to take in the key sights is via a hop-on, hop-off bus tour.

The Journey to Chicago

While this adventure may begin and end in two positively urban environments, along the way you will be treated to views of some of the Northeast's most idyllic countryside. From D.C. you'll pass through Pennsylvania, heading north to Cleveland. Once you leave Cleveland you will travel into Ohio and Indiana before pulling into Illinois to your final destination of Chicago.

Once you're here, you can take your time exploring this lake-side city. Discover the outdoor art in Millennium Park including the renowned "Bean", a huge reflective sculpture that mirrors back the park (and you!) in a whimsical fashion. There's something in the city for everyone, from fine dining and culture to sports and music - so get ready to fall in love with Chicago.

While a journey from Washington D.C. to the Windy City of Chicago would take hours upon hours in the car, seeing the USA by train is by far the superior choice. Rather than sitting cramped up in a car, you'll have a comfortable seat in a world-class carriage with all the amenities you could need.

On board the Capitol Limited service, you'll have the option of choosing a comfortable Reserved Coach seat, or the chance to stretch out with Roomette or Bedroom in the sleeping car. Not to mention a panoramic view of the American countryside while you relax and tuck into your meal.
