Journey to Pittsburgh on Amtrak's the Pennsylvanian

Journey into the countryside of the real America on Amtrak's Pennsylvanian service. Departing from the iconic New York City, you can witness the landscape transform from urban jungle to rolling plains and farmlands that surround the gem of a city that is Pittsburgh.
While it may not seem like the most obvious choice for an American itinerary, it's certainly a place worth exploring. The city's industrial roots could have potentially held Pittsburgh back in a bygone era, but it has flourished into a vibrant city with a strong cultural and academic presence, while still paying homage to its rich history.
En route to Pittsburgh, PA
As we mentioned, to visit Pittsburgh, you'll be boarding the Pennsylvanian, an Amtrak service departing from Penn Station in New York. On board, you can sit back and relax as the landscape transforms before your eyes, with access to the snack car, and Wi-Fi so you can stay connected with family and friends.
If you choose to travel in a Business Class seat, you'll have plenty of room to settle down for this scenic journey, along with a fold-down tray table, reading light and AC outlets to charge your phone or camera (just remember to bring an international power adaptor!).
Some of the highlights of the route west include the craggy Allegheny Mountains that form part of the mighty Appalachian range, not to mention the famous Horseshoe Curve. This iconic example of railroad engineering was first opened in 1854, and is now considered a historic landmark.
Keep your eyes peeled for the picket fences and colourful farmhouses of Pennsylvania Dutch Country before you pull into the city.

Welcome to Pittsburgh
The city is built around three converging rivers, the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio. The wedge of island where they all meet is known as the Pittsburgh Golden Triangle, and it is here you can start your discovery of this wonderful city.
Situated at the tip of the triangle is the Point State Park, a historic spot where you can enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the grass overlooking the rivers or admiring the 30-metre-tall fountain. To fully appreciate the beauty of this city, however, you'll need to head up one of the funiculars which ascend Mount Washington just across the river.
You can get the Duquesne Incline's century-old cable car up the mountain en route to Altius, a fine dining restaurant where you're certain to enjoy the modern American cuisine just as much as the panoramic views of Pittsburgh.
