You may be spending the day out amidst nature on one of The Ghan’s many exhilarating off-train excursions. These unforgettable adventures are a fantastic way to experience the true spirit of the Australian outback and immerse yourself in the rich culture of this stunning land. Here are 3 of our favourite off-train adventures that await you when you traverse Australia’s Red Centre on The Ghan.

Cruise down Katherine River with the Nitmulik Gorge Cruise

From sparse desert to winding rivers, The Ghan will take you through some of Australia’s most beautiful and diverse landscapes. When you reach Katherine in the Northern Territory, the stark contrast between desert and the tranquil waters of the Katherine River becomes crystal clear.

The stunning Nitmulik Gorge

The Nitmulik Gorge Cruise is included in your journey on the Ghan when you travel in Platinum or Gold Service and is an absolutely breathtaking off-train experience. As you cruise down the Katherine River, you will gaze at the momentous sandstone cliffs towering above the glistening water. Your knowledgeable guide will tell you of the Dreamtime stories surrounding these formidable rock formations, including how the Gorge came to be named and its significance to the Indigenous Jawoyn people.

Marvel at the rugged, time etched cliffs of the Gorge, their sheer size and all-encompassing glory providing a spectacular backdrop to the Katherine River. This captivating off-train excursion is a fantastic way to take in the beauty of the Northern Territory and is sure to be a highlight of your Ghan experience.

 

Wander through the Alice Springs Desert Park

One of the great highlights of The Ghan is your journey through Alice Springs, one of Australia’s most iconic outback towns. Steeped in rich Indigenous culture, this quaint town is full of rugged natural beauty.

A perfect way to witness the stunning flora and fauna of the Red Centre is by paying a visit to The Alice Springs Desert Park. This incredible off-train excursion brings you to the heart of Central Australia, where you will discover unique desert animals and plants, ancient cultural relics and stunning geological marvels. 

During your guided walking tour you will get up close and personal with the Australian outback; marvelling at the wildlife in the fascinating Nocturnal House, observing the resident dingoes in their natural environment and being treated to an intimate free flight bird show.

This off-train excursion is included in your Platinum or Gold Service fare. The Alice Springs Desert Park is included for Platinum or Gold Service guests who are continuing on to Adelaide or Darwin. Guests ending their Ghan journey in Alice Springs do not have this activity included in their fare.  However, for an additional fee of $100 per person you may choose to enjoy this excursion. Take to the skies with the Twin Parks fixed wing scenic flight - Optional upgrade

While in Katherine, you have the opportunity to experience another life changing the off-train experience. Purchase tickets for the Twin Peaks scenic flight and witness the beauty of the Top End from amongst the clouds. You will be transferred to Royal Air Force Base Tindal, where you can enjoy a glass of sparkling wine before taking to the skies. Your 90 minute light aircraft flight will see you fly over some of Australia’s most spectacular wilderness areas, including the Kakadu and Nitmiluk National Parks.

Your pilot will provide full commentary for the duration of the flight, allowing you a truly immersive experience as you pass over magnificent waterfalls, rugged terrain and fascinating wildlife.

The aerial view of this beautiful section of Australian landscape is one to be remembered, and to help commemorate your magical experience you will receive a souvenir certificate upon landing.

The Twin Peaks scenic flight is one of the most memorable off-train optional upgrade trips The Ghan has to offer and is available for an additional fee of $470.00 per person.

Tickets can be purchased whilst you relax on The Ghan, directly from your restaurant manager.

Please note that if you choose this optional upgrade you will not be able to participate in the included off-train excursions planned on the day.
